Mér er illt.
Mér er illt í öllum skrokknum. Mér er illt í allri sálinni.
Mér er illt í réttlætiskenndinni. Í dag líður mér illa í íslensku lýðræði.
Í öllu samfélaginu heyri ég fólk lýsa þessari sömu tilfinningu. Samfélagið öskrar á breytingar og réttlæti. Sumir öskra á Austurvelli. Langflestir öskra samt inní sér, inní sig, heima í stofu og yfir eldhúsborðinu. Ég hef ekki hitt neinn síðustu vikur sem er ekki reiður. Mig langar að stinga upp á því að við hlustum.
Hlustum á nokkur orð sem við þekkjum og skiljum.
Gáleysi. Ég þekki mann sem drap mann af gáleysi. Ég þekki hann ekki mikið, en vinir hans segja mér að þetta hafi verið kaldhæðni örlaganna – að hann hafi verið og sé enn hvers manns hugljúfi. Gáleysi.
Hlustum á orð sem við þekkjum og skiljum.
Slys. Þegar einhver gerir eitthvað óvart, þegar sonur minn missir brauð með sultu í hvítan sófa, þegar mamma missir fullan pott af möndlugraut á stofuborðið og hvítur grauturinn slettist á gesti, húsgögn, gólf. Slys. Leiðinlegt, óheppilegt, kjánalegt. En slys. Atvik sem gerist óvart og sá sem veldur því ætlaði ekki. Slys.
Hlustum á orð sem við þekkjum og skiljum.
Ábyrgð. Að sjá um eitthvað og líta á það sem sína sök ef hlutirnir fara úrskeiðis. Ábyrgð.
Þetta eru ekki skilgreiningar úr orðabókum. Þetta eru skilgreiningar úr mínu hjarta, sú merking sem ég legg í þessu einföldu orð. Við þekkjum þau öll. Við skiljum þau öll á sama hátt.
Gáleysi.
Slys.
Ábyrgð.
Hlustum á fjórða orðið. Hlustum á orðið sökudólgur. Þetta gildishlaðna orð sem okkur var bannað að elta um leið og allt hrundi. Okkur var bannað að leita að sökudólgum. Af hverju hlýddum við því?
Af því að orðið er hlaðið neikvæðri merkingu. Samt þýðir það næstum það sama og orðið ábyrgðarmaður. Sá sem ber ábyrgð.
Ímyndum okkur Geir H. Haarde segja í upphafi kreppunnar: Við skulum ekki leita að þeim sem bera ábyrgð á hruni hagkerfisins.
Þá hefðum við fyrst hlegið, svo grátið og sagt við hvert annað: Er ekki í lagi með þennan mann? Auðvitað þarf að finna þá sem bera ábyrgð og það þarf að gerast – strax!

Við erum slysstaður. Ég er slysstaður, Austurvöllur er slysstaður, Alþingi er slysstaður, Stjórnarráðið, hver vinnustaður er slysstaður og hvert og eitt einasta heimili er slysstaður. Mér líður eins og að risajeppi hafi keyrt á mig. Mér er illt. Ég er nýkominn af slysstað og nýfarinn að ná áttum.
Rétt eftir að slysið átti sér stað gerðust áhugaverðir hlutir sem skipta höfuðmáli í rannsókninni.
Í fyrsta lagi: Slysstaðurinn var girtur af. Við fengum ekkert að sjá, en stórir menn birtust reglulega til að lýsa fyrir okkur verksummerkjum.

Slysstaðurinn var girtur af og lokað fyrir upplýsingar. Áberandi einstaklingar létu sig hverfa. Bæjarfógetinn sagði: Slysið kom frá útlöndum og við skulum ekki leita að sökudólgum. Þar við situr – sex vikum seinna!

Mér er ennþá illt í öllum mínum siðferðisgildum. Af hverju? Þau hafa verið gengisfelld með því að þeir sem sáu um rekstur heimilisins neita að taka ábyrgð á heimilisbókhaldinu. Þeir ríghalda í vald sitt, þrátt fyrir að allar forsendur séu brostnar. Og sá sem mest heldur í valdið gerir það best, því hann hefur gert það svo lengi – Davíð Oddsson heldur í vald sitt eins og blóðsuga á hálsinum á bæjarfógeta sem neitar að handtaka ræningjana.
Það er næstum eins og slysið hafi valdið mér heilaskaða. Ég held hann sé ekki varanlegur því ég er smám saman farinn að hugsa aðeins skýrar.
Hverjar eru einföldustu staðreyndir málsins? Hvar liggur ábyrgðin? Hverjir eru sökudólgarnir sem okkur var sagt að leita ekki að?
Í fyrsta lagi:
Bankarnir fengu að verða tólf sinnum stærri en íslenska hagkerfið. Hverjir leyfðu það? Ríkisstjórnin, Fjármálaeftirlitið og Seðlabankinn.
Í öðru lagi:
Bankarnir urðu tólf sinnum stærri en hagkerfið. Hverjir bera ábyrgð á því? Eigendur bankanna og bankastjórarnir sjálfir, sem þáðu milljónir og tugmilljónir í laun á mánuði – – – – – einmitt með þeim rökum að þeir bæru svo mikla ábyrgð.
Við erum öll slysstaður einmitt núna. Við erum öll í losti. Og slíkt ástand er auðvelt að misnota með því að gera einfalda hluti flókna.

Ég þekki semsagt mann sem drap mann af gáleysi. Óvart. Hann olli slysi með því að keyra fullur. Hann gerði eitthvað sem hann hefði getað sagt sér að gæti valdið skaða. Allir þessir aðilar gerðu afdrifarík mistök. Ég er viss um að þeir gerðu þetta ekki viljandi. Þeir ætluðu ekki að gera Ísland gjaldþrota.
