Ef ég vildi halda áfram að leika mér í eldhúsinu varð ég að taka til. Ef ég gerði þetta ekki, sinnti ekki mínum skyldum, var mér bent á hvað betur mætti fara og látin bæta mitt ráð á einhvern hátt. Oft tóku foreldrar mínir ábyrgðina og fóru út með ruslið, því þau vissu sem var að vond lykt magnaðist upp ef ruslið stóð lengi inni. Ég lærði þetta fljótt þegar ég stofnaði eigið heimili og veit sem er að þegar mikið er um að vera, þá þarf að fara oftar út með ruslið.
Kosningar eru lögum samkvæmt haldnar reglulega – kjörtímabil þingmanna er fjögur ár en sé þing rofið skal forseti Íslands ákveða kjördag. Það er sem sagt ekkert skilyrði að bíða í fjögur ár eftir kosningum. Víða um heim tíðkast að halda kosningar oftar en lög kveða á um. Vantrauststillögur geta náð fram að ganga. Stjórnir geta orðið óstarfhæfar. Þær geta setið rúnar trausti. Ráðherrar víða um lönd segja af sér vegna glapa í starfi – í Svíþjóð sagði kona af sér eftir að hún borgaði fyrir Toblerone með ríkisinnkaupakorti. Í Danmörku sagði meira að segja kona af sér vegna þess að maðurinn hennar hafði ekki staðið í skilum með reikninga. Íslenski bankageirinn er hruninn, skoðanakannanir sýna að ríkisstjórnin nýtur einungis stuðnings þriðjungs þjóðarinnar, þingmenn kvarta yfir upplýsinga- og verkefnaleysi en hér situr stjórnin sem fastast og segir sér helst til varnar að stjórnarandstaðan hafi ekki stungið upp á neinum lausnum heldur.
Nú hafa meiri breytingar orðið í íslensku samfélagi en urðu á löngum tíma áður. Hlutir sem voru sjálfsagðir og óumdeildir fyrir nokkrum vikum síðan eru allt í einu óljósir. Hagvöxtur er að hverfa og kreppa komin í staðinn. Íslenskan hefur gefið heiminum enn eitt alþjóðlega orðið. Saga. Geysir. Kreppa. Kaupmáttur lækkar. Atvinnuleysi eykst og fólk íhugar að flytja úr landi. Ísland er allt í einu ekki stórasta land í heimi, og íslensku útrásarvíkingarnir reyndust ekkert klárari en viðskiptajöfrar af öðru þjóðerni. Breytingarnar eru svo umfangsmiklar, svo gagngerar að ekki er hægt að sjá að umboð sem kjósendur veittu fyrir átján mánuðum síðan sé gilt. Það hefur of mikið gengið á. Við verðum að kjósa aftur.
Það sem hefur ekki breyst hérna á Íslandi – ekki enn – er að hér býr harðduglegt fólk sem hefur í gegnum tíðina ekki verið hrætt við að taka til hendinni.
